Always on the lookout for interesting pieces to add to our inventory, THIS is a favorite find! Although we can't determine the exact age of this fire starter/smudge pot, we do know that they were most popular during the late 1800s into the early 1900s, in both England and America. Oil, typically kerosene, was stored in the pot where the pumice wand soaked it up. A lit wand burned very hot and was used, in turn, to ignite fireplaces and woodstoves without the need of kindling. This example is in outstanding condition, with minimal wear to the wand. We recommend it be used for decorative purposes only as open storage of kerosene and other fuels is an obvious fire hazard. The wand measures approximately 9" in length, the pumice 2" diameter: the pot stand 8" tall (feet to top of handle) and approximately 5" in diameter. Unmarked, we can not determine it's country of origin. As a result this item may be ineligible for shipping to the US if the de minimus exemption is revoked. We encourage interested American friends to purchase while the de minimus is still in place, to avoid disappointment.
At Where the Wild Finds Are, all items are in pre-loved condition and sold “as is”. As with most vintage items, signs of wear appropriate to age may be present. Notable flaws are highlighted in the listing where we describe and photograph each item with as much detail/accuracy as possible, ensuring you understand the condition of the product(s) you are purchasing. Please take a thorough look at the photos provided, and contact us with any questions PRIOR to checkout – we are happy to help!
