This vintage Burleigh Ware pitcher, by Burgess and Leigh Pottery circa 1930's, is in outstanding condition for it's nearly 100 year age. No chips or cracks, and very minimal crazing on interior lip of spout. The jug tells the story of the Gretna Green (Scotland) blacksmith who was famous for marrying too-young English couples (see desperate father racing on horseback, shotgun in hand, to stop the proceedings)! Features the poem/rhyme:
“The dangers of the long night ride are past
In Gretna Green they find themselves at last
The friendly Smith awhile his work resigns
To hear from them the oft repeated lines”
Measures 8" tall x 7" wide (spout to handle).
A wonderful conversation piece, bar decor, or serving piece. Made in England.
